It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly ATT, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues.

There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R.

The S language is often the vehicle of choice for research in statistical methodology, and R provides an Open Source route to participation in that activity.

One of Rs strengths is the ease with which well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, including mathematical symbols and formulae where needed.

Great care has been taken over the defaults for the minor design choices in graphics, but the user retains full control.

A couple bugs Ive noticed was a crash when I quit X11 and when installing Bioconductor, it seems confused about what version is the latest (currently 1.3).

Once reported, our staff will be notified and the comment will be reviewed.

Although we take precautions when assembling binaries, please use the normal precautions with downloaded executables.

Since R 3.0.0 the binary is a single-arch build and contains only the x8664 (64-bit Intel) architecture.

PowerPC Macs and 32-bit Macs are only supported by building from sources or by older binary R versions.

The default package type is mac.binary and the binary repository layout has changed accordingly.

This binary distribution of R and the GUI supports both PowerPC and Intel based Macs.

The corresponding binaries of R packages are available for both architectures as well.

Starting with R 2.3.1, CRAN binaries support Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and higher only.

It is, however, possible to compile binaries for earlied OS X versions from sources.

To compile packages you may have to download tools from the tools directory and read the corresponding note below.

Please check the MD5 checksum of the downloaded image to ensure that it has not been tampered with or corrupted during the mirroring process.

For example type md5 R-4.0.2.pkg in the Terminal application to print the MD5 checksum for the R-4.0.2.pkg image.

Contains R 4.0.0 framework, R.app GUI 1.72 in 64-bit for Intel Macs, TclTk 8.6.6 X11 libraries and Texinfo 6.7.

The latter two components are optional and can be ommitted when choosing custom install, they are only needed if you want to use the tcltk R package or build package documentation from sources.

Note: the use of X11 (including tcltk ) requires XQuartz to be installed since it is no longer part of OS X.

Always re-install XQuartz when upgrading your macOS to a new major version.

Contains R 3.6.3 framework, R.app GUI 1.70 in 64-bit for Intel Macs, TclTk 8.6.6 X11 libraries and Texinfo 5.2.

Contains R 3.3.3 framework, R.app GUI 1.69 in 64-bit for Intel Macs, TclTk 8.6.0 X11 libraries and Texinfo 5.2.
